There was a mixed reaction from parents and students for the recent school reopening announced by the Education Ministry. Many had expressed relief over the decision and others conveying concerns at the present Covid-19 situation.
In an effort to promote transparency and to instill confidence among parents and students, the Health Ministry (MOH) and Education Ministry (MOE) had worked together to launch the “School Search” feature in the CovidNow data website.
The feature was proudly announced by the Health Minister, Khairy Jamaluddin in a tweet and he said it is part of the government’s efforts to empower Malaysians with vaccination coverage information.
“Transitioning to endemicity requires transparency, to empower all of society. Today, MOE and MOH launched a ‘School Search’ feature on CovidNow. You can get (information on) vaccination coverage of your child’s school, not just for students, but for staff as well.”
“We hope this gives confidence and comfort to parents and teachers alike. “
“For now, the schools listed are mainly MOE schools. Private schools can opt in by emailing [email protected] with the email subject ‘CovidNow Inclusion’.”
So, how does this feature works?
First, you’ll need to get to CovidNow’s website and once inside, you’ll see a blue stripe with the text ‘NEW FEATURE: Click to view vaccination coverage for your school!’
Click on the blue stripe and it will take you to a page dedicated for schools, where you can find out the vaccination coverage of your child’s school by entering the state and school’s name in the drop-down menu.
For example, when we input “SMK Puchong Utama 1” into the search bar and pick Selangor, a number of schools are listed and you’ll need to choose the correct school that your child is in.
After selecting the school, you will be able to get information, such as vaccination rates of students and staff.
In this example, the feature shows that 97.8% of SMK PU1’s staff has received at least one dose of the vaccine and 97.8% are fully vaccinated. As for students born in 2009 or earlier, 46.4% have been given at least one jab while 1.6% are fully vaccinated.
Meanwhile, this feature also displays student vaccination rates by their birth year.
The website also showed a a location map of the school to ensure that the school you are looking for is accuracy.
