Woman warns others of ‘Spycam’ inside GSC Gurney Plaza toilet, turns out to be a screw instead

We were always told to keep a lookout for spycams hidden in the public restrooms, hotels, and changing rooms to prevent becoming a victim of those who later sell these ‘leaked’ videos online.

Recently, a woman took to Facebook to warn others of a spycam she found mounted within the walls of the Golden Screen Cinema (GSC) toilet in Gurney Plaza, Penang.

In the post, Mikayla Mühlberger shared that the device was found only at the 4th toilet cubicle, where it was the one where most female patrons used.

Shocked by what she found, she proceed to destroy the spycam with a sharp key. She added that she did it to protect other women from being spied on.

In another update, she also denied those who claimed that it was a flushing sensor.

“For those thinking it’s the flushing sensor, it is not, I know where the flushing sensor is. This lens was carved into the side divider wall. The hole you see is not carved by me. This is what gave it off to me, the HOLE, then I looked closely, I saw the lens,” she wrote.

Mikayla’s post went viral online and it has garnered a mixed reaction from netizens. Some remained sceptical of her claims, while others thanked her for alerting others of the spycam’s existence and location.

Many also criticised her for destroying public property and accused her of creating unnecessary panic among the public.

GSC’s explanation

In response to the incident, GSC Head of PR and Branding Sharmine Ishak said the ‘spycam’ that Mikayla found is actually a screw belonging to a tissue dispensing holder.

“Perhaps it was because it was round in shape, which caused the netizen to mistake it as a spycam,” he was quoted as saying by China Press.

“I’m not sure as to whether every toilet stall had the same kind of tissue dispensing holder, but the fourth toilet stall’s dispensing holder was previously dismantled and moved somewhere else, thus leaving the screw behind,” he added.

Meanwhile, he also urged the public to contact GSC immediately should they encounter any suspicious incidents.
