Tun M: Najib Is Malaysia’s First Criminal VIP

The former prime minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has criticised the administration over the temporary release of Najib Razak’s passport to enable him to travel to Singapore in a press conference yesterday (25 October).

Mahathir had also described Najib as the country’s first VIP criminal for being able to leave the country despite being found guilty by the courts.

Last week, the courts had approved Najib’s application for his passport to be temporarily released for him to travel to Singapore to accompany his daughter, Nooryana Najwa who is expected to give birth in early November.

The three-member Court of Appeal said that there were reasonable grounds for Najib to get back his travel documents but ordered him to return his passport to the court by 22 November.

“This case is an extraordinary case. Datuk Seri Najib looks healthy when he goes to the Parliament and is able to go for campaigning in Melaka but is not healthy when he needs to enter the courts.”

“And now he can get his passport back. Not only that, after he was allowed to get his passport back, he decided to postpone his trip to Singapore to help his party with the campaigning in Melaka.”

“Usually, when someone is found guilty and sentenced to prison time, they would have to serve their time but Najib gets escorted like a VIP.”

“He is Malaysia’s first criminal VIP.” he said.

Najib is now awaiting the Court of Appeal’s decision on his appeal against his conviction, which the penalty on him is a 12-year jail sentence and RM210 million fine, after he was found guilty on 7 charges of criminal breach of trust, money laundering, and abuse of position involving RM42 million of SRC International Sdn Bhd funds.

Similarly, his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor was granted temporary release of her passport by the courts for her to travel to Singapore to be with Nooryana.

However, Najib is currently looking to delay his trip to Singapore to assist UMNO in the upcoming Melaka state election on 20 November.
