Survey finds that 59% of M’sian youths fear they will never afford a home in lifetime

Amid the soaring prices, a survey conducted by Architects of Diversity (AOD), titled Youth Aspiration Manifesto Survey, found a few rather depressing findings among Malaysian youths.

AOD is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that aims to bridge communities and identity groups among youth in Malaysia. AOD said the aim of the survey is to uncover youths’ opinions on issues such as employment, housing, education, wealth distribution and others.

The survey was collected opinions of 3,089 youths between 18 and 30-year-old from 22 February to 7 March 2022, with quota sampled according to statistics in the 2020 census by race, gender, age and state.

As reported by Malaysiakini, the study found that 59% of youth in our country fear that they will never be able to afford to buy a home in their lifetime.

In addition, over 90% of the respondents also called on the government to develop more affordable homes for the people. The survey also found that 75% of the respondents want the government to set a ceiling price on housing rentals.

In the meantime, 52% of youths expressed fear about future unemployment and this was particularly highlighted among Bumiputera respondents.

It was also noted that the fear of future unemployment sentiment was also felt more strongly by those from East Malaysia compared to others in the region.

When asked about the government’s recent move to increase the national minimum wage, 87% of respondents supported the move. Furthermore, 88% of them also called for employment protection of gig workers such as e-hailing and delivery riders.
