Sports & co-curricular activities to resume in schools starting from 21 March

The Ministry of Education (MOE) has announced that all physical sports and co-curricular activities in school can resume starting Monday, 21 March.

Meanwhile, Senior Education Minister Datuk Dr. Radzi Jidin stressed that teachers, students, and coaches involved in these activities must be fully vaccinated.

He added that all the activities and participants must adhere to standard operating procedures (SOPs) set by the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the National Security Council (MKN).

The decision comes after about a year’s ban of all co-curricular activities, including sports, games, clubs, associations, uniformed bodies, and gatherings in schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Radzi said the MOE has made several improvements to the latest guidelines on the safe implementation of activities in school.

Among other measures listed in the School Management and Operation Guidelines 3.0 include using school facilities with enough room and ventilation if indoors, making sure participating students and teachers are asymptomatic, and maintaining physical distancing during the activities.

Further, he said sports tournaments within the school compound will also be allowed.

“But only teachers, coaches, and students from the involved school will be allowed to participate. Sports activities and co-curricular activities that involve external parties will need the approval of the MOE,” he clarified.

“The ministry has the prerogative to cancel events if the organisers are found violating the SOPs.”

The Senior Education Minister said the new ruling also applies to all private institutions, including schools and centres, registered under the MOE.

He urged institutions that are not registered under the ministry to also adhere to the same SOPs anyway to safeguard everyone’s wellbeing.
