Road Tax Renewal Exemption Could Be Extended For Another 2 Months Until 31 May 2021

Formerly, Minister of Transport has announced that road tax renewals are exempted up until 31 March and may be extended up until 31 May 2021 subject to internal discussion.

Lately, Minister of Transport, Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong revealed that his ministry is currently planning to extend the exemption period for the renewal of road tax for private vehicles for another two months.

The exemption are only applicable to those who have a valid motor vehicle insurance. Wee stated;

“I have discussed about the exemption extension with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) director-general for them to make necessary preparations as there are still states that recorded a high number of COVID-19 cases such as Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.”

The Ministry is also in the midst of thinking ways to avoid congestion at JPJ counters once the exemption period is over. Wee said that the Transport Ministry may introduce the settlement of unpaid road tax cases in phases.

Indeed back in January 29, circumventing the crowding of JPJ counters was one of the reasons given by the Ministry when they announced the exemption of road tax renewal for private vehicle owners.

The ministry had earlier granted all private vehicle owners an extension of renewal for Motor Vehicle Licences (LKM) and Competent driving Licences (CDL) from Feb 1 to March 31.

This was to alleviate public concerns regarding the expiration of their licences and to comply with the health standard operating procedures to prevent crowding in public places.

If this latest exemption extension were to happen, it means that private vehicle owners only have to renew their road tax after 31 May 2021.
