The 14th Parliament term is set to end on 15 July 2023 and we have about 1 year more until then. However, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has recently announced that the 15th General Election (GE15) may be held earlier than expected.
According to Harian Metro, Ismail had reminded UMNO’s and Barisan Nasional’s (BN) political machinery to prepare for an early GE15 in the event it is held so.
“A year is not a long time for political parties to face elections,” he said.
“This is why I ask for everyone in UMNO and BN to get prepared quickly as it may be held earlier than the end of term.”
He said this during a press conference after holding a special meeting with Jalinan Rakyat (JR) Wanita staff in Bera yesterday (20 June).
Ismail added that early preparations are necessary to avoid chaos, especially within the BN components parties.
Nonetheless, Ismail also did not gave an exact date as to when the GE15 is expected to be held.
“As for when the election exactly is, I have told you, don’t ask, but be prepared,” he added.
BN’s take on GE15
Ever since BN’s landslide victory in the Johor state election earlier this year, there had been several calls from some UMNO members to dissolve the Parliament early to make way for GE15.
Among those who are mooting for the general election included President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who both said that the ground is currently in favour of the party.
However, earlier this month, Ismail Sabri said he is not in a hurry to pull the trigger soon despite facing pressure from certain UMNO leaders to hold the GE earlier. It appears that he is now making a U-turn on his earlier statement.
