Last week, 2 young hawkers who claimed that they were being extorted by 3 police officers in a road block hit the headlines of most papers. They even said that the police officers extorted RM500 from them as he failed to produce the work travel permit from the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI).
After a series of events, they admitted that they have been making false accusations on the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) officers and the whole “extortion” incident did not happened.
As reported by Oriental Daily, Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng had in a press conference explain that this was the reason for the young hawkers to change their statement during the police interrogation.
Despite that, Lim said that the investigating officer tried to persuade the young hawkers to not retract his statement as he explained the consequences of changing his confession would be regarded as making a false report, and this constitutes as a criminal offence, which he insisted to do so.
“In regard of this matter, I would like to apologise to all parties, especially to the police force and media for the huge mistake by this young man for making false accusations,” he said.
However, in the press conference with Lim, the young hawker denied that they had made a false accusation and insisted that they were being extorted by the PDRM officers.
He then explained that he changed his statements as he cannot withstand the overwhelming pressure caused by the incident and didn’t know it will create so much trouble later on. He want to end it as soon as possible.
“I really don’t want to do this every day. I have my own life to live and I have to do my job well,” he said.
“I understand the consequences of changing my statement and making a false report, I am willing to face it. I have been busy with this case every day and I wasted eight hours of my time yesterday. I just want to let it go,” he added.
Nevertheless, he admitted that he was not able to recognise the “police officer” who extorted them and did not know whether those that extorted them were real PDRM officers too.
