Penang restaurant operator probed by PDRM for Communist-themed wallpaper

Communism is a very sensitive topic in most parts of the world. The incident happened in Penang when a restaurant operator have their restaurant wallpaper being designed after Former Chairman of the Communist Party of China, Mao Zedong and have elements of communism within it.

State Criminal Investigation Department Chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Rahimi Ra’ais said that investigations will be carried out and stern action shall be taken against the restaurant operator. The staff from the 2 outlets located at Juru on the mainland and Pulau Tikus on the island will be called in for investigations too.

The police had yet to call the 40-year old restaurant operation in as he is currently under the 14 day Covid-19 quarantine.

The case will be probed under Section 47 of the Societies Act 1966 for publishing propaganda of an unlawful society and Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for making, publishing or circulating any statement, rumour or report with intent to cause, or which is likely to cause, fear or alarm to the public.

What happened next?

The wallpapers depicting Chinese communist leader Mao Zedong and elements of communism had been torn down by the police on 2 January 2021 around 12:40 p.m.

The incident went viral on social media too and there are netizens demanding for the citizenship of the owner be stripped.

The restaurant is owned by a Malaysian Chinese and his wife of China nationality.
