Pantothenic acid is a kind of vitamin and it is also known as vitamin B5. It is one of the 8 B complex vitamins that is essential to our health.
What is Pantothenic acid?
Pantothenic acid is one of the eight B complex vitamin and it’s main function is to help you convert fats, protein, and carbohydrates into energy. It is also involved in hormone and cholesterol production.
It is commonly found in natural food, as common as eggs, meats, cabbage, potatoes, beans, nuts and many others.
How does Pantothenic acid help treating Acne?
In a study carried out by Dr. Lit-Hung Leung in 1997, he believes that a deficiency in vitamin B5 causes your body to digesting and processing fats inefficiently. As a result, these excess fats will start to accumulate in the sebaceous glands, and sebum production will increase, causing acne to grow even more rapidly too.
However, it is extremely rare for someone with deficiency in vitamin B5 as it is widely found in most food.
Is there any side effects from taking Pantothenic acid?
Pantothenic is likely safe for most people that takes in the appropriate amount. As it is soluble in water, it is highly unlikely that you’ll be overdosed by Pantothenic acid. Any excess of Pantothenic acid will be excreted via the urinary tract system, and at most, it will turn your urine bright yellow.
How much should you take?
In general, the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI) recommends:
- Infants 0-6 months, 1.7 mg
- infants 7-12 months, 1.8 mg
- children 1-3 years, 2 mg
- children 4-8 years, 3 mg
- children 9-13 years, 4 mg
- men and women 14 years and older, 5 mg
- pregnant women, 6 mg
- breast-feeding women, 7 mg.
However, there is no recommended dosage for those who are treating acne with Pantothenic acid.
Pantothenic acid (Vitamin B5) is important for maintaining our health. Supplements which contain vitamin B5 may help treating acne, however, more researches on this theory is required. The results are so far have been promising.
