Nurse turns empty Covid vaccine vials into a beautiful chandelier

A nurse in Colorado has created a one-of-a-kind sculpture for these pandemic times with shiny things that hold the hopes of millions of people.

Laura Weiss, a public health nurse, collected hundreds of empty Covid-19 vaccine vials and turned them into a stylish chandelier. It was her way of paying tribute to her fellow healthcare workers.

Weiss had already retired from service when Boulder County Public Health asked her to help in administering covid vaccines in February.

She gladly agreed to offer her help. But during the vaccination drive, she noticed that hundreds of empty vaccine vials were lying around or going to be wasted. That’s when she thought of using them to create a work of art.

Weiss wanted to know if she could use all the Moderna vaccine glass vials that were kept in the centre. After she was given the go-ahead, she started working on a chandelier.

“I had noticed all these hundreds and hundreds of empty vaccine vials that were otherwise going to be wasted, and I thought they were just really beautiful and wanted to do something significant and meaningful with them,” Weiss said.

Weiss told CNN she wanted to do something with light because it has been a dark and challenging year for millions of people around the world.

“I think that light can represent hope and clarity and it also has the potential to actually expand the bigger view and verify perspective,” she said.

Her art piece is now finally done. Pictures of the chandelier were shared on Facebook by Boulder County Public Health.

The post was captioned: “One of our talented Public Health Nurses, Laura Weiss, created this gorgeous piece of art using empty COVID vaccine vials. Thank you so much for sharing this artwork with the community, Laura!”

The chandelier doesn’t have a permanent home yet. Weiss said she wants everyone to see it and understand her intention of honouring her co-workers who have worked tirelessly during the pandemic.
