Nightclubs are finally allowed to operate without restrictions starting 14 May!

Nightclubs are finally allowed to operate starting from this Saturday (14 May) onwards, but customers entering the premises mask up, except while dining, drinking and dancing.

On 12 May, the National Security Council (NSC) has issued a one-page guideline regarding the reopening of such businesses, about 2 weeks after the country transitions to endemicity.

The guidelines said that nightclubs are allowed to operate at 100% capacity and there will no longer be any restrictions on the activity.

However, operators are required to ensure that all employees and customers have the MySejahtera contact-tracing app installed on their smartphones and have enabled the MySJ Trace feature when in the venues.

The guidelines also require operators to ensure employees and patrons were of low-risk status on the app.

“Covid-19 cases or individuals undergoing the HSO (home surveillance order) will not be allowed to enter the said premises,” the guidelines wrote.

In addition, patrons must conduct Covid-19 RTK-Ag tests facilitated by medical practitioners registered with the Malaysian Medical Council whether in person or virtually, within 24 hours before they enter the premises.

Alternatively, operators can also carry out the tests on customers at the entrances to premises.

The council said operators must ensure the latest test results of customers were negative. Naturally, those who did not undergo the tests in the 24-hour window would not be allowed entry.

Lastly, operators are required to ensure that their premises had appropriate ventilation, based on guidelines set out by the Occupational Safety and Health Department.
