M’sian Govt considering to open more cemeteries dedicated for those who died of Covid-19

As the death counts of Covid-19 in Malaysia rises, the Malaysian government is considering the need to open more cemeteries to accommodate the burial of Muslims who have succumbed to Covid-19.

According to Bernama, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs), Datuk Seri Dr Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri said that the matter will be brought up for discussion with the National Fatwa Council to obtain the view from the mufti of all states.

“The focus will be on the Federal Territories (especially Kuala Lumpur).”

“This is to ensure that we can properly manage the remains of those who died from Covid-19.” he said to the reporters from Bernama after presenting donations to 200 canteen operators and cleaning workers via drive-through, organised by Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (Yadim) on Friday (30 July).

In addition, Dr Zulkifli said that Yadim has spent more than RM 1 million to provide assistance to those in need throughout the nation, especially when they are facing the impact of the pandemic.

Meanwhile, he added that the drive-through donation programme is a collaboration of various non-governmental organisation and it would not been as successful without them.

On the other hand, the state executive councillor of Melaka, Datuk Rahmad Mariman said that they have plans to look for new burial grounds in the state for Covid-19-related deaths.

“A discussion on whether there should be additional burial grounds will be held during the special meeting on Covid-19 next week.” he said.

As of now, Melaka is recording a 2-digit Covid-19 deaths daily for the past week.

On Thursday (29 July), the Melaka Chief Minister’s Secretary for Community Affairs, Yong Fun Juan said the state is offering complimentary columbarium niche spaces for families to store urns.

He said that those who cannot afford for the fees to store the cremated remains of their loved ones can reach out to him for assistance.

He added that buying single urn niches could be expensive.
