M’sian Airport records 2 million passengers in April 2021 alone, despite travel restrictions in place

Surprisingly, the Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) had recorded a total of 2 million passengers in April 2021 alone, which is a 1,366.2% increase from the same month last year.

As reported by Bernama, MAHB had released a rather unexpected statistic regarding air passenger movement within our country. In comparison to April 2020, MAHB recorded only 135,000 passenger movements.

Meanwhile, April 2020 was the second month of the first Movement Control Order (MCO) and there were more restrictions in place as compared to the current MCO.

From the statement, the 2 million passengers includes 548,000 international passenger movements and 1,400,000 domestic passenger movements.

MAHB said “This was achieved despite continued interstate and international border closure in Malaysia, as well as interstate city suspension and temporary border closure to passengers from nine countries in Turkey.”

However, if assessing the passenger movement in an annual basis, MAHB saw a 79.3% decline of passengers within the past 12 months. Even so, MAHB expects that the passenger movement will increase by the end of this year given the rollout of the Covid-19 vaccine that could potentially allow for unrestricted travel, both internationally and domestically.

Given this statistics, are you surprised how Malaysians record such a sizeable amount of passenger movements despite the travel restrictions? Share your thoughts in the comment section!
