Mooncake festival – Dog-friendly mooncakes to raise funds for needy

Pet shelters have had a rough 18 months, as donations in the pandemic have dropped. The lockdown has curtailed moneymaker gigs and adoption drives usually held in malls on the weekends.

In conjunction to celebrate the upcoming Mooncake Festival, a group of pet lovers are organizing a yummy fundraiser.

With the help of six pet shops, Siew Yenn, owner of Furrenz, the Malaysian pet treats and raw food purveyor since 2009, is selling a special line of their pork and chicken dog-friendly mooncakes with 50% of the price going directly to Meefah Shelter and KL Pooch Rescue.

“The dog mooncakes are made to our signature recipe, fresh pork or chicken, with no additives or artificial flavours,” Siew Yenn explains. “It’s the authentic product but we usually have fancy packaging. We’ve created a new no-frills packaging for this line, so that the shelter dogs can have a bit of cash.”

As the treats are fresh, the group have co-opted a refrigerated specialist to deliver. Once delivered to your home, the dog mooncakes can be kept fresh in the fridge for two weeks, or frozen for up to three months.

The two shelters hope to raise enough money from this sale over their basic costs for the next few months.

“We have about 250 dogs under our care,” Carol Loh, KL Pooch Rescue, shares. “Our monthly food bill is about RM12,000. We’ve also had some high medical bills recently because our senior dogs need long term treatments and medications.”

“Our goal is to be a self-sustainable shelter but because of the pandemic we’ve lost our revenues from dogs’ boarding. Also, our fundraising events which we had been doing in the past years dried up due to the MCO.”

Meefah Shelter currently houses around 2,000 dogs and 23 cats. “Our monthly food bill comes up to about RM45,000,” Yong Lee Fong says. “While we get a special price from the supplier, we hope that the mooncake fundraiser will raise money for kibble.”

The Furrenz Dog Mooncake 2021 Fundraiser comprises chicken and pork mooncakes priced at RM8 for one piece, or a pack of three for RM18, and a pack of six for RM28. Fifty percent goes to the shelters.

The mooncakes will be available at: Adoring Pets, Kajang (017-358 0248), Pets4U, Bandar Puteri, Puchong (017-2692 900), Bowhouse Pet Saloon, Bandar Utama (010-2016 535), Wetnose, Damansara Perdana (016-2066 601), Swim Paradise Park & Café, Old Klang Road (016-9297 246) and Nanny McPaw, Penang (011-3613 7602).
