Ministry of Education says PdPR ends on 31 August, followed by schools reopening

Yesterday (17 July), the Ministry of Education of Malaysia (KPM) had in a statement said that the Teaching and Learning at Home (PdPR) will continue only to 31 August. After that, schools across the nation will resume the face-to-face classes in stages starting 1 September.

In the statement, the ministry said that 253,366 teachers and administrators (61.30%) and 10,876 support staff (46.33%) had been given at least 1 dose of the Covid-19 vaccine as of yesterday.

“Taking this vaccination rate into account, the ministry has decided that schools can open in stages for face-to-face learning from 1 September.”

“The ministry will continue to take into account risk assessments by the health ministry and National Security Council (MKN) to see if there is a need to change those dates.”

Due the Movement Control Order (MCO) was imposed nationwide, schools were forced to close for almost half of last year. Nonetheless, the learning process was then replaced with the PdPR.

As for this year, primary school students are allowed to returned to school in March, while secondary school students resumed their classes in April.

However, due to the sudden surge of Covid-19 cases in May, schools had once again closed their doors.

According to the National Recovery Plan (NRP) announced by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin previously, education activities are only allowed to operate in stages when the nation reaches the 3rd phase, which is expected to be at the end of August.

As for the nation to enter the 3rd phase, the conditions to met are the average daily Covid-19 cases drop below the 2,000 mark, ICU capacity is at a “comfortable” level, and at least 40% of the population are fully vaccinated.
