There are a handful of us who do not take the importance of keeping our environment clean seriously.
This is also the main reason that we often find our rivers polluted, streets filled with garbage and many different kinds of pollution.
The Environment and Water Minister, Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man had proposed an amendment to the Environmental Quality Act 1974 (AKAS 1974) in response to the issue.
According to Berita Harian, the amendment proposed included a minimum fine of RM5,000 and a maximum fine of RM10,000,000 if one is found guilty of involving in acts of environment pollution.
The amendment is expected to be tabled in Parliament for discussion by the first quarter of next year.
Meanwhile, Ibrahim said the people had demanded that that appropriate punishment be imposed on those who pollute the environmental, especially those who are involved polluting our rivers.
He added that the ministry had conducted studies into the matter and proposed the AKAS 1974 amendment to be considered in Parliament.
In April, the media reported that the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) urged the government to amend AKAS 1974 to impose heavier penalties on industries that failed to implement waste management in accordance with established rules.
Its president, Tan Sri Soh Thian Lai, said the amendment to the act was deemed important to teach a lesson to management who failed to take appropriate measures to implement proper environmental management and waste disposal systems that could reduce risks to the environment.
Besides, Ibrahim also proposed to increase the compound from RM2,000 to not more than 50% of the maximum penalty allocated for offenses.
In addition, he said the proposal also include a mandatory prison sentence of not more than 5 years, especially for water pollution offenses and the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Report.
Currently, those convicted of offenses under Section 34B of the Act can be fined not more than RM500,000 or imprisoned for not more than 5 years or both.
