Melaka Election Sees Lowest Ever Voter Turnout, Signaling Malaysian’s Disappointment Towards Politics

The Melaka State Election 2021 has come to an end and it turns out that Barisan Nasional is still the preferred administration by the people of Melaka.

However, the election ended with the lowest voter turnout rate in its history, with only 61% of its eligible voters turning up to vote.

The turnout rate looks pale when compared the total voter turnout in Melaka during the General Election 14 (GE14) on 9 May 2018 was 84.52%.

According to The Star, a total of 476,037 eligible voters has cast their ballots across the 217 polling district centres in 28 state seats.

There were a total of 112 candidates who are contesting to become the Melaka State Legislative Assembly Representatives (ADUNs) with some seats seeing a 6-corner fight from candidates.

Undoubtedly, one of the main reasons for the low voter turnout rate is the concerns people have regarding the Covid-19 pandemic, where many feared that there will be a surge in Covid-19 cases similar to what happened after the Sabah Election in 2020.

However, there were many political analysts who are of opinion that many are disappointed in the current political instability in Malaysia.

When compared to the Sabah State Election in 2020 had a overall turnout rate of 66.61%, the overall turnout rate for the Melaka State Election in 2021 does see a minor decrease of approximate 5%.

There had also been a big misconception among Malaysians regarding the State Election, where most think that they will be voting for ADUNs again in the GE15.

However, this is not the case as the Melaka State Government will not be dissolving until another 5 years after this election, regardless of when GE15 will be held.

Despite the low overall turnout rate, the Melaka State Election saw an 89.9% voter turnout for those eligible for early voting including police, military personnel and their spouses on 16 November.
