Lotus Malaysia No Longer Selling Or Giving Away Single-Use Plastic Bags

In line with their efforts to promote sustainability, Lotus’s Malaysia formerly known as Tesco Stores (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd is no longer selling or giving away single-use plastic bags at their checkout counters.

The initiative has already been implemented across all 62 Lotus’s stores starting 1 July 2021.

Lotus’s Penang E-Gate and Lotus’s Desa Tebrau in Johor stopped offering single-use plastic bags on 15 June and 17 June respectively, and the remaining 60 Lotus’s stores have now also done the same.

You can now bring your own shopping bags or purchase Lotus’s vibrantly coloured green and yellow reusable bags at all their stores.

Regardless of whether you use your own reusable bags or Lotus’s, you’ll be able to claim eight Clubcard points, if you are a member. Once you have accumulated enough points, convert them to cash vouchers, so that you can use them when shopping in Lotus’s stores!

With the tagline, ‘Bring Home Change’, Lotus’s hopes to show everyone that the simple act of reusing one’s bag can bring a big sustainable impact to the environment.

The issue with single-use plastic bags is that most of them end up in landfills and oceans, and they can take up to thousands of years for them to decompose. During this process, they break down into microplastics, which are detrimental to animal life as well as the environment.

This is why Lotus’s Malaysia has taken the initiative to stop providing single-use plastic bags to customers, and are instead encouraging the use of reusable bags. By eliminating the need for plastic bags in the retail/grocery industry, the nation will be one step closer to achieving sustainability.

Lotus’s Malaysia believes that via industry collaboration, we can push this initiative even further, and help the environment for the benefit of the country.
