Khairy warns of the start of Omicron wave in Malaysia

Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin has warned Malaysians of the Omicron wave that has now arrived in Malaysia.

Retweeting, Health Director-General (DG) Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, Khairy said “The Omicron wave has started in Malaysia” and urged Malaysians to expect an increase in the number of cases daily.

However, Khairy is confident that the country’s high vaccination rate is capable of getting the Covid-19 outbreak involving the Omicron variant under control.

Meanwhile, Khairy said the country’s healthcare system is prepared for the Omicron wave and that Category 3, 4 and 5 cases are on the decline.

“Let us overcome this wave together,” he said.

As of Tuesday (25 January), a total of 601 Omicron cases have been detected in the country. Health DG Noor Hisham said that the ministry has detected 162 new Omicron cases since Sunday (23 January).

Meanwhile, 6,188 Delta, 233 Beta and 14 Alpha cases were detected during the same period.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said the risk level related to the Omicron variant remains very high, with the number of new Covid-19 cases reaching another record last week.

It added that Omicron will continue to increase its dominance globally over the other variants of concern. Omicron now accounts for 89.1% of samples collected in the last 30 days that have been sequenced and uploaded to the Gisaid global science initiative.

According to AFP, Delta, the previously the world’s dominant variant, now makes up only 10.7% of total infections.

We should all do our part and practice the SOPs at all times. Hopefully, we’ll once again curb the spread of the virus.
