Khairy: Omicron-Wave Likely To Hit Malaysia

Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin had indicated that Malaysia is likely to join the long list of countries being hit by the more transmissible Omicron Covid-19 variant.

In a series of tweets, he said that there is a high possibility of it happening while quoting another tweet made by the Health director-general (DG) Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah saying that the country’s Covid-19 infectivity rate (Rt) rose to 0.99 as of Saturday (1 January).

“A wider booster shot coverage, wearing face masks, good ventilation, #TRIIS, MySJ Trace, and international border control are amongst ways to slow down the spread of Omicron.”

“Some refers to data that Omicron not as bad as Delta. It seems that way, but Omicron is more transmissible than Delta.”

“If the case denominator is larger, definitely the hospitalisation and ICU admissions will increase.” he said.

In addition, Khairy said the Health Ministry wants to avoid the collapse of the healthcare system and the sensible strategy was to slow down the spread of the Omicron variant.

The infectivity rate of Covid-19 in the country had been steadily increasing since 26 December 2021 and this could be an indication that Omicron has already been spreading in the community.

As of 31 December 2021, Malaysia has recorded 64 Covid-19 cases of Omicron variant, with 63 cases being imported infections and 1 was a suspected local case.

Here’s a reminder for all to abide by the SOPs and to only go out when it is necessary. Everybody’s effort is required to curb the spread of the virus!
