Khairy: Malaysia Cannot Afford Another Lockdown

As other countries see a spike in the Covid-19 daily cases due to the recently discovered Omicron variant, some may have wondered if we would go through another round of lockdown.

In a tweet yesterday (9 January), Heath Minister Khairy Jamaluddin has assured Malaysians that there will be no more lockdowns as our country cannot afford another cycle of lockdown, in terms of economy and welfare.

On the other hand, he said the government’s current strategy is to contain the pandemic is focused on mitigation.

Khairy also used an example of the situation in China, where total lockdown is being implemented when they only had 3 reported Covid-19 cases, which had been proven effective in containing the virus from spreading.

“There is no doubt that China’s approach to enforce a lockdown has been effective.”

“However, their containment and ‘Zero Covid’ strategy also means a total lockdown (is enforced) when there are only three positive cases,” Khairy said.

Under the mitigation strategy, the government will handle Covid-19 cases effectively, which is by ramping up the vaccination process as well as following the SOPs.

Khairy said Malaysia has been successful in achieving high vaccination rates, had managed its Covid-19 cases effectively and has constantly reminded the people to continue to adhere to standard operating procedures.

These measures had effectively bring down the death rates, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admissions, as well as hospital admissions.

Meanwhile, he also expressed his support for the Health Director-General, Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah to continue his duties as health director-general.

Malaysia has experienced 3 series of lockdowns since the pandemic hits our country, with the very first lockdown implemented back in March 2020, proving it effective in curbing the spread of the virus.

Unfortunately, lockdowns had brought devastating impact on our economy and the people’s well-being and nobody hopes to experience it again. With that, we must abide by the SOPs and stop the spread of Covid-19.
