Khairy: Covid-19 Booster Shots Now Available For All 18 And Above

The Technical Working Committee (TWG) under the Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force-Booster (CITF-B) has recommended the Covid-19 vaccine booster doses for all residents of Malaysia aged 18 and above.

In a statement, Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said the vaccines that are available are Comirnaty (from Pfizer BioNTech), AstraZeneca and CoronaVac (Sinovac), with priority will be given according to the “age step down” approach, as well as for frontliners, individuals with comorbidity, pregnant women and those who need to travel abroad.

“For recipients of CoronaVac, the booster dose would be given 3 months after the second dose. They are recommended to receive a Comirnaty (Pfizer) booster dose for all levels or the AstraZeneca vaccine for individuals aged 50 and above.”

“For individuals who cannot take Comirnaty or AstraZeneca vaccines as a booster, the CoronaVac vaccine can be administered, nonetheless they have to inform the vaccination centre (PPV) to receive the vaccine.” Khairy said in the statement.

Apart from that, Astra Zeneca vaccine recipients will be given the booster dose 6 months after they receive their second dose. However, the Health Ministry (KKM) recommends to receive the same vaccine for all ages although the Comirnaty vaccine can be used.

As for recipients of other vaccines such as Comirnaty, Spikevax (Moderna) and Convidecia (CanSino), Covilo (Sinopharm) and Janssen (Johnson & Johnson), KKM recommends to receive the Comirnaty vaccine as the booster dose for all ages or AstraZeneca vaccine for individuals aged 50 and above.

“Recipients of Comirnaty, Spikevax and Convidecia would be given booster dose 6 months after the last jab while for recipients of Covilo vaccine, it is three months after the second dose and the Janssen vaccine, two months after the last shot.” Khairy said.

Meanwhile, he said the booster dose is available at private medical facilities, off-site private health facilities, selected health clinics and government hospitals, as well as outreach centres.

Khairy also said the appointment of booster doses for eligible individuals will be given through the MySejahtera application. Recipients can register themselves to be on the waiting list to obtain appointment dates at selected public and private health facilities too.

You can check the list of public and private health facilities involved in administering the booster dose via the KKM’s website at covid19.moh.gov.my/vaksin-covid-19 or Protect Health website at protecthealth.com.my.
