Malaysians are puzzled after they found that the supposedly cheaper domestic flight to Kuching is even more expensive that flying to London, from Kuala Lumpur during the Christmas.
The netizen who discovered this had took his grievances online, pointing out how much the local and regional airlines were charging for flight tickets to East Malaysia for the upcoming year-end holiday season.
The Twitter user @aripfredo then called out to Malaysian Airlines, demanding them to explain why ticket prices from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) to the Kuching International Airport was so expensive.
He also shared 2 screenshots of the airline’s booking page as he compares them to the flight to London.
The air ticket for an economy class flight to Kuching on 25 December 2021 costs between 1,499.18 to over RM2,000 compared to a similar flight ticket to London, which only costs RM1,469.
He joked that it is better for him to celebrate Christmas in London, which is 10,000km away, rather than going back his home in Sarawak which is just 971km away.
Meanwhile, the Malaysian Airline’s official social media account had responded to aripfredo’s questions and said:
Hello, @aripfredo. Please be informed that our prices are dynamically set based on demand and availability. Prices may vary depending on the dates and times selected. We would recommend that you search on a different date combination to obtain your preferred fare. -JY— Malaysia Airlines (@MAS) November 23, 2021

However, Malaysian Airlines is not the only carrier who had been increasing their flight tickets to East Malaysia during this holiday season.
Sarawakian singer-songwriter Alena Murang has raised the same question on her Facebook, asking why are the air tickets so expensive during the Christmas holidays. She even pointed out it is the same with Malaysian Airlines, AirAsia and Indonesian carrier Malindo Air.
She also tagged the Sarawakian Transport Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin in her post, adding that it is cheaper to travel to Kota Kinabalu in Sabah and Langkawi in Kedah than it was to fly to Kuching for Christmas.
“On behalf of all Sarawakians, those working outside of Sarawak and those waiting for their loved ones to come to home. Please reduce the prices or at least give us a logical explanation for the prices,” she said, while making a similar joke that she might as well fly to London for the holidays.
Alena had shared several screenshots of the price of the air tickets from KLIA to Kuching between the end of November till late December, where it showed an extreme difference.
The lowest-priced ticket was at RM261 on 1 December, while the highest-priced ticket was at RM1,652 on 19 December, which is almost a sixfold increase.
