Islamic status of Malaysian woman being questioned after marrying overseas

Marriage should be something that brings happy memories. However, the marriage of this couple, Illi Najwa Saddique and Manpreet Singh Pawar, had been frowned upon by Malaysian religious bodies.

According to Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Ahmad Marzuk Shaary, the government is concerned on whether she is still a Muslim.

Ahmad Marzuk Shaary is currently waiting for reports from Johor Islamic Religious Department (MAIJ) about the marriage between these couple.

Based on the current information that he have, Illi is still considered a Muslim as there is no application from her to change her religious status. There is no application from her to marry overseas too.

Illi, who is Unity Minister Datuk Halimah Mohamed Sadique’s niece, had caused an issue in the social media when she posted about her marriage in India. Among the questions raised by the netizens were why she was allowed to travel to India during MCO, and is it right for a Muslim to take part in a Sikh religious ceremony.

Earlier on Sunday, Illi had clarified that she is still a Muslim and her husband, Manpreet had converted to Islam last year. However, his family will be still calling her Navpreet as it is difficult for them to call her Illi.

According to Senator Asmak Husin, those who have recently converted to Islam may have certain confusions between tradition and religion, hence, stirring this issue up.

Do you think that it was necessary to drill into this religious issue? Give us your thoughts in the comment section below!
