‘Ikan Siakap’ Restaurant Owner To Be Taken To Court Over Overpriced Fish Scandal

The restauranteur in Langkawi who became infamous earlier this month for selling ‘ikan siakap’ (sea bass) for over RM1,000 may soon be taken to the court for charging their customers an exorbitant price.

According to Kosmo, the restauranteur is to be charged under Section 53 (A) of the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011, which provides for a fine of up to RM50,000 or a compound of RM25,000 if convicted.

Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, Datuk Rosol Wahid said the restauranteur involved had failed to submit complete business documents required by his ministry within the stipulated period.

He added that the restauranteur had been cooperating with the Ministry of Home Affairs and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP), but unfortunately, they failed to fulfill the instructions to send complete and detailed business documents up until 17 November.

“Previously, the period for sending the detailed documents involved has been extended to enable the trader to correct the error.” Rosol said.

He added that investigation paper has been opened and they will be sent to the Public Prosecutor’s Office for further action.

He said action was taken only when the restauranteur failed to maintain and keep records properly.

Meanwhile, Rosol was quoted saying by Harian Metro that the restauranteur has been charging RM16/grams for sea bass over the past 3 years, but they do not have solid evidence to prove their claim.

Previously, customers of the restaurant had went to Facebook to share how they were being charged over RM1,000 for a 7.48kg sea bass, which makes up a significant portion of their total bill of RM1,855.20.

After that incident, there were some other customers who made similar claims on the Internet, but it appears that it is from a different restaurant in Langkawi.

The authorities then began to investigate the fishy business and started conducting checks at restaurants and eateries to prevent price manipulation under Ops Menu.

The operation aims to deter irresponsible traders from manipulating food prices and the weight of food products.
