Facebook urges iOS users to allow tracking to help keep the App free

Following the recent iOS14.5 update from Apple, the update allows users to prohibit software from tracking the user’s whereabouts. On the other hand, Facebook, which relies heavily on user’s data for advertising purposes, isn’t so happy about this move from Apple.

According to The Verge, Facebook and Instagram had since then issued a notice to all iOS users to threaten users to allow them collect their data to keep the App free.

It is reported that the notification first appear on Saturday (1 May) within the iOS app, telling users to “help keep Facebook free of charge.” A similar message appeared on Instagram’s iOS app too, given that Facebook is Instagram’s parent company.

“This version of iOS requires us to ask for permission to track some data from this devices to improve your ads. Learn how we limit the use of this information if you don’t turn on this device setting.” the screen reads.

“We use information about your activity received form other apps and websites to: show you ads that are more personalized, help keep Facebook free of charge and support businesses that rely on ads to reach their customers.” as what was being told to The Verge.

The iOS 14.5 prohibits all software from tracking users’ information, where the software which rely on these information will not function properly because users don’t allow the permission track them.

However, app developers are still able to use other information a user provides for targeted advertising, even if the user opts out of letting the app track them, but that information can’t be shared with another company for ad tracking.

After having knowledge about this, will you still allow Facebook to track your personal information? Comment below!
