If you are an Android phone user and you’ve been experiencing some of your apps crashing randomly, don’t feel frustrated. You are not the first one to experience this.
It turns out that Google had rolled out a buggy update to the Android System WebView app yesterday (23 March) which causes unrelated Android apps started crashing for some users.
Shortly after multiple complains were filed in to Google, they’ve found a permanent fix for the app crashing issue. All you need to do is simply update both Android System WebView and Chrome to version 89.0.4389.105:
- Open the Play Store app
- Search for “Android System WebView“
- Select Update. If it doesn’t say “Update,” skip this step
- Repeat these steps for “Google Chrome“
Google also provided a fix for rare cases on Android 10 or 11 where a manual update of WebView or Chrome “may fail to complete.” In the event where you face these situation, go to Settings > Apps & notifications > Google Play Store > Storage & cache > Clear Data. You should be able to proceed with the following update steps, with Google noting how this workaround clears some of your Play Store settings, including parental controls and auto-update preferences.
