Deputy HR Minister: Wage Of RM80 Per Hour Is The Reason Why Malaysians Choose To Work Overseas

The Deputy Human Resources Minister, Datuk Awang Hashim said that a high wage rate is the key factor that lured Malaysians to work abroad.

He said that the minimum pay in Australis is A$20.33 an hour which is equivalent to RM84.28 while the minimum pay per hour in South Korea is US$8 or RM33.16.

“These rates… attract locals to work abroad.” he said this in response to Datuk Shabudin Yahaya (PN-Tasek Gelugor).

Previously, Shabudin had informed the Dewan Rakyat that a local journalist with a Malay newspaper had gone undercover to work on a farm in Australia claimed that there were forced labour involving Malaysian workers.

Shabudin then raised the question on what was being done to prevent the forced labour of Malaysians working in Australia and South Korea.

“To overcome the problem of exploitation of Malaysians working abroad, the government through the Ministry of Human Resources and the Private Employment Agencies Act 1981 (No. 246) has required companies that wants recruit Malaysians to obtain a Category B or C license under the act.”

“The Act also provides that no person can carry out recruiting activities unless they have been granted a license.”

“Through the provision, all licensed agencies must carry out their work in accordance with the terms set by the Malaysian government legally.” he said.

Meanwhile, he also said that agencies that breached the regulation can be fined up to RM200,000 with those involved also liable to a maximum of 3 years jail.

He added that the Ministry had yet to receive and reports against any recruitment agencies of exploitation.

He also advise Malaysians to only use the services of licensed agencies.
