Chopsticks Are Not Haram! Local Actor, Adam Corrie Responded To Backlashes For Sharing Chinese Culture

Malaysian actor, Adam Corrie Lee is a Chinese Muslim whom had embraced Islam 14 years ago. He is relatively active in spreading Islamic teachings and also involves himself in Islamic programmes to talk about his experience in embracing Islam.

Recently, Adam has on Instagram revealed that he was once being reprimanded for using chopsticks when eating his food, despite being a mualaf (convert).

In response, Adam or Adam Corrie Lee Abdullah, said that there were a handful of people out there who are “shallow-minded” for telling him that it is haram (forbidden) for Muslims to eat using chopsticks.

Adam explain that we live in a multiracial society and eating with a chopstick is not considered as ‘haram’, adding that this is how a Chinese man like him enjoys his meal from the bowl.

Adam then quoted a verse from Surah Al-Hujurat which reads, “O mankind, We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into races and tribes, so that you may identify one another. Surely the noblest of you, in Allah’s sight, is the one who is most pious of you. Surely Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware.”

Meanwhile, he explained that eating with chopstick is indeed a culture practiced by the Chinese community. In addition, he also showed his followers how to properly use chopsticks while eating in a bowl.

“I will usually eat using my hands if the rice is served on a plate. We had our meals at a Chinese Muslim restaurant, and they served their steamed ginger chicken rice in a bowl. So that’s why I used chopsticks, obeying to my own culture.” Adam said.

Nonetheless, Adam has been responding to the malicious comments that internet trolls left against him.

“This is one of the challenges I encountered as a Chinese Muslim. There are a handful of Muslims out there who do not reflect Islamic morals to new converts and also to the ‘unbelievers’. It can make us feel that our presence as Muslims is unwelcomed.” he said in his Instagram story.

Meanwhile, many netizens supported Adam’s view and they commented that most Muslims were confused about the difference between a religion and culture.

Netizens also pointed out that that the Islam religion allows its practitioners to practice the cultures of their race, as long as it does not deviate from the teachings of Islam.
