English is one of the most important languages we need to master to ease communication at the international forum. While there has been a debate about the importance of learning English, some Malaysians think the language should not be given emphasis as we have our own national language.
Nonetheless, this recent incident would prove why learning English is important for us.
In a Twitter post by user @isusemasaviral, they shared a TikTok video made by a woman who warns the Muslim community about some brands of spices sold in local grocery stores and supermarket contains pork.
However, this is not true as the label actually reads, “USE ON: Beef, Chicken, Lamb, Pork, Fish, Seafood, Potatoes”.
In the video, the TikTok user was seen filming at the supermarket aisle as she showcased the different spices from the brand, including their Cajun Seasoning, Season All Seasoned Salt, Steak Spice Seasoning and more.
“For those who frequently visit Jaya Grocers or whatever and want to buy spices from these racks, you all need to be careful because look at this guy, this Cajun Seasoning, the ingredients contain pork.” the TikTok user could be heard saying.
She then turns the bottle around and showed the label with the word ‘pork’ in it.
This is why English proficiency is important
However, eagle-eyed netizens were quick to spot that what she claims was in fact, a suggestion of what dishes the seasoning could complement. It also clearly states ‘Use on’ and ‘Use in’.
The TikTok user then went on to suggest that seasonings marketed by the brand using orange font indicate that it ‘contained pork’ when that was not the case.
Meanwhile, many netizens have criticised the woman for not reading the label properly and was spreading misinformation to the public.
“I was so confused when I first watch this video. Only then I notice, ‘use on’ pork etc. That’s not its ingredient,” a netizen said.
“It seems that she does not understand the term ‘Use on’. Does she think that everything contains pork if the label said ‘pork’? Please read carefully to prevent spreading misinformation,” another netizen said.
