A family of five who suffered 1st and 2nd-degree burns after a hotpot exploded in front of them while having their meal at a restaurant in Kuala Lumpur is now demanding justice after the restaurant offered unfair compensation.
In a Facebook post, the user Jason shared that the incident took place back in September 2022 when they were dining at the restaurant. They ordered four hotpots but in less than 5 minutes, flames went out in 2 of them.
They then called out to a male staff for help reignite the fire. The restaurant uses gel fuel for its hotpots, and at the moment, the fuel container has almost run out. So, he took it away from the fire and shook it before gently applying it.
Not long after, the fire for 2 of the other hotpots was extinguished and another female staff came to assist them in reigniting the fire.
Unlike the male staff, the female staff shook the fuel container vigorously the next thing we knew, the gel container exploded and flames erupted around their table.
The CCTV camera footage showed a man, believed to be Jason himself, putting out the fire on his face and head with his hands, while his family members also tried to put out the flames on each other.
According to Jason, the staff allegedly did nothing for 5 minutes, until another staff took a fire extinguisher to put out the fire.
Suffering first and second degree burns
Jason’s mother immediately drove him to a nearby hospital for treatment, while the restaurant owners sent his father and two sisters to the hospital. On their way to the hospital, the restaurant agreed to cover their medical costs and follow-ups as compensation.
Upon reaching the hospital, Jason and his family paid for the treatment using their insurance first to get immediate treatment. However, Jason said that both parties agreed to discuss further on the plans for compensation after Jason and his family made a full recovery.
Jason suffered burns on his face and body, while one of his sisters suffered burns on her left hand.
Restaurant owner turns back on their promise and offered unfair compensation
In October 2022, Jason proposed a compensation plan to the restaurant to the restaurant owners, who promised to get back to him in one week. However, after dragging the matter for a month, the restaurant owners came with an unreasonable compensation package.
“They proposed an absurd compensation package, which included RM2,000 in cash and RM1,000 in cash vouchers to dining at their restaurant,” Jason said.
Jason added that after he rejected the offer, the owners increased the cash compensation to RM3,000.
“My medical expenses were close to RM30,000 and my tuition fees now cost RM10,000 due to one month’s absence. As for my part-time job, I would’ve made RM5,000 and my clothes are worth RM500,” Jason said.
After the incident, Jason said his family no longer dare to dine in the restaurant. “This incident has caused us psychological trauma,” he said.
To end the post, Jason said he wrote the post to demand justice for himself and his family. He also hopes that his sharing will prevent others from becoming victims too.
