A foreign woman at the Penang International Airport was arrested on Thursday (29 December 2022) after she cracked a joke about carrying a bomb in her bag to the airport staff at the check-in counter.
According to Bernama, Barat Daya district police chief Supt Kamarul Rizal Jemal said the 33-year-old woman who works as a factory operator in Ipoh, Perak was arrested by the police at 4.30 pm before she onboarded her flight to Medan, Indonesia.
He added that the woman and her two friends were scheduled to board the flight to the North Sumatran city at 5.30 pm.
Nonetheless, she missed the flight and was remanded for two days until 30 December 2022.
“When the staff at the check-in counter inspected her bag, the woman said loudly ‘there is a bomb’, which was heard by the staff and other passengers nearby,” Supt Kamarul explained.
The case is currently being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation.
Here’s a reminder for all travellers not to make such jokes as such incidents are not a laughing matter.
