Speaking at a livestream interview, UMNO president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi accused former leader Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad of indoctrinating the party and its members into hating DAP.
He said that during Mahathir’s days as the party leader, he gave the people a false impression about DAP.
“Dr Mahathir was the one who indoctrinated us for 22 years and portrayed a negative picture of the party.”
“But in the end, he was the one who accepted them and involved them in the government,” he said, adding that even PAS and Bersatu also accepted them in the past.
Zahid said this when asked about its grassroots anger over UMNO’s alliance with DAP, despite publicly declared that they would never work with the party before the 15th General Election.
Now, UMNO is part of Anwar’s unity government which also comprises DAP, with Zahid as the deputy prime minister.
Mahathir admits to have demonised DAP
Meanwhile, Dr Mahathir, himself, in 2017 acknowledged that he had demonised DAP when he was in UMNO as they were political rivals back then.
Zahid then said that BN should be grateful to Prime Minister (PM) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim because it was given six ministerial posts in the administration despite winning only 30 seats.
He added that DAP, on the other hand, had only four ministerial positions although they won 40 seats.
However, Zahid assured that he will not sacrifice political philosophy due to the political cooperation.
The four main principles the party holds, that of Islam as the religion of the country, Bumiputera privileges, Bahasa Melayu as the national language, and the powers of the Malay Rulers, would not change.
