PM Anwar: MOF officials detected serious procedure breach in Muhyiddin’s government on RM600 billion expenditure

NewsPM Anwar: MOF officials detected serious procedure breach in Muhyiddin's government on...

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the Finance Minister, has claimed that there were several serious lapses in the allegedly RM600 billion expenditure during Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s tenure as prime minister.

“From what I have been informed, there have been several serious procedural breaches involving a huge amount and a few projects, whereby the mark-ups were too high and handed over to specific parties.”

“This has resulted in those parties spending extravagantly,” Anwar said, adding that Muhyiddin did not do a proper tender process while he was the prime minister.

Anwar said that the matter was confirmed to him by the Ministry of Finance (MOF) officials, who alleged that the funds were misappropriated.

However, he said that they have not discussed whether a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) was required to investigate the matter.

“I’ll let our friends in the Cabinet make a call on this matter, but I can say with confidence that some serious rules were broken,” Anwar said.

However, Anwar stressed that his focus is to strengthen and rebuild the nation’s economy and not go all-out witch-hunting any particular individuals.

Muhyiddin denies such claims

Earlier, Muhyiddin denied accusations of him swindling RM600 billion from government coffers during the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said that he is aware that a police report was lodged against him on the matter by Hulu Langat MP Mohd Sany Hamzan, and that a similar allegation was made by Digital Communications Minister Ahmad Fahmi Mohamed Fadzil.

“Going back to allegations of misappropriating funds amounting to RM600 billion, I am not sure where this figure is being cited from. I think it refers to the eight Economic Stimulus Packages worth RM530 billion that I implemented when I was prime minister, to help the people and businesses affected during the pandemic period,” he said in a statement.

Muhyiddin explained that a majority of the RM530 billion was non-fiscal and does not involve government expenditure, making it impossible for him to misappropriate. He added that he did not have any authority over the use of the said fund.

“I’m not afraid of being investigated because I know I’m not misusing the people’s money entrusted to the government to be used for the purpose of helping the people during difficult times,” he said.
