A number of steps will be put in place to relieve the congestion at the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complex in Johor Bahru, according to the Menteri Besar (MB) of Johor, Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.

These include expanding the automated immigration processing gates to accept Singaporeans and other foreigners entering Malaysia through the CIQ immigration checkpoint, as well as adding more e-gates for Malaysians.

Onn Hafiz stated that the lanes for motorcyclists and cars arriving and leaving Johor at the Causeway will also be reorganised while speaking during the presentation of the Johor 2023 state budget in the Johor State Legislative Assembly (DUN) on Thursday, December 1.

According to CNA, the Johor MB announced that an average of 211,000 persons have crossed through CIQ every day since the international border completely reopened on 1 April 2022.

Onn Hafiz revealed that there will be an additional 18 e-gates for Malaysians to use at entry points and an additional 12 e-gates for people travelling on foot or by bus to use at exit points in order to reduce congestion.

He said that the immigration service would increase the use of e-gates for visitors, though he did not provide a timeline for their deployment.

In addition, the state of Johor is investigating if it is feasible to permit light vehicles to utilise the lorry lanes as a substitute route during rush hour. The counters would need to be upgraded for the convenience of car drivers.

The Johor MB also praised the reopening of the land border between Singapore and Malaysia during the same speech, claiming that it had greatly benefited Johor.

Johor attracted RM60.9 billion in investments in 2022, the most of any state in our nation. Additionally, Johor now has the lowest unemployment rate out of all Malaysian states, dropping from 4 to 2.5% in 2022.
