NewsPuad: Bersatu should thank BN for tabling anti-party hopping law

Bersatu should be thankful to Barisan Nasional (BN) for the anti-party hopping law is the only thing that saved the party post-GE15 (15th General Election), says UMNO Supreme Council member Datuk Puad Zarkashi.

In a Facebook post, Puad rebutted Bersatu information chief Wan Saiful Wan Jan’s claim that Perikatan Nasional (PN) is the only coalition that speaks about principles and chooses to remain as the Opposition.

Paud then reminded Wan Saiful that the PN coalition comprised of political frogs who had deserted UMNO.

“The anti-party hopping law saved PN. Without the law, many PN MPs would have switched parties. Furthermore, many PN MPs are also former party hoppers,” he said.

“Therefore, PN should thank BN. The anti-party hopping law was passed and enacted under a BN prime minister.”

Puad also claimed that this was proven when PN was unable to prevent Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), which consists of MPs who are Bersatu members, from supporting Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairperson Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as Prime Minister.

Paud then said that BN’s participation in the ‘unity government’ is based on ‘trust’ and on contrary, PN chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin accepted BN’s support for his administration with every intention to eliminate UMNO for good.

“This is why Muhyiddin could be the prime minister for just 17 months. It’s his own fault. He schemed for things but failed,” Puad said.

Significance of anti-party hopping law

The anti-party hopping law came into effect on 5 October and it has successfully prevented another political crisis, according to experts.

Taking the 15th General Election as an example, coalition leaders were forced to find ways to resolve all internal issues in the coalition by holding talks among its component leaders.

With this, it promotes better political stability as members who do not support the chairman’s ‘move’ cannot jump ship, which potentially causes another government to collapse.
