People rely on social media as their primary source of information these days. However, without adequate controls on fake news, social media has become a breeding ground for misinformation.

Recently, a pair of religious preachers came under fire from netizens after they claimed that drinking excessive milk can cause people to have bad eyesight and the need to wear glasses in a livestream.

The matter was first highlighted by Twitter user @Uyushh, where she criticise their controversial claims online.

“The other day they said that taking painkillers is a ticket to hell. Now, they are focusing on milk?” she wrote.

“This couple continues to spread nonsense on social media. These people need to be banned as they are tarnishing Islam’s image, making it seem like a difficult religion,” she added.

Stop them from spreading misinformation!

Her tweet has since gone viral online, with many netizens slamming the pair of religious preachers for spreading false information.

“The government really need to control these people who introduce themselves as ustaz/ustazah in public or media, making it like a Dr. for medical students. It needs to be licensed, introducing themselves as ‘ustaz’ without it can be criminalized. Only then they will mind what they inform the public,” a netizen said.

“After my years of studying optometry, I have never come across the theory of over-consumption of milk causing vision problems,” another netizen said.

Meanwhile, some netizens pointed out that since the ustaz himself was wearing glasses, it meant that he had not heeded his own advice.

“The male ustaz has vision problems since he is wearing glasses. Perhaps he drank too much milk?” a netizen said.

Let’s hope that JAKIM will take action against these religious preachers and stop them from spreading misinformation to the public.
