GE15 did not resolve the political instability, but it is a catalyst for a stronger Malaysia

NewsGE15 did not resolve the political instability, but it is a catalyst...

The 15th General Election (GE15) has come to an end, but a whole new drama starts rolling as the nation faces a hung parliament, with no single coalition having a clear majority.

The two major coalitions that have emerged from the elections are Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Perikatan Nasional (PN), and both are expected to negotiate with Barisan Nasional (BN) and the Borneo bloc, which consists of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), to form a unity federal government.

However, the real question is — who would BN, GPS and GRS want to work with?

BN with PH?

At the moment, it appears that BN is the key kingmaker, while GPS and GRS could exert a significant influence too. Thus, all three could make demands to PH and PN.

On first look, BN could easily join forces with PH to form the federal government without the help of the two Borneo coalitions. However, if BN does so, it will be against its own mantra of ‘no DAP, no Anwar’.

In addition, there is also a big question if PH supporters can accept the coalition to work with BN after all the on-going corruption issues.

There is also be a possibility that BN would work with PN at both the federal and state level (Perak and Pahang), but what would be the trade-off?

The Borneo pact with PH?

On the other hand, there is a probability that GPS and GRS would work together with PN but historically, none of them favoured PAS due to their different takes on religious matters.

With PAS winning more than half of the parliamentary seats in PN, it would definitely have a very significant say in the coalition.

All that being said, even if a grand unity federal government was formed, the next burning question is — how long would it last?

If it breakdown again, Malaysians would have to go through a painful period of political instability again.

However, the future is all that dim as this is the true nature of democracy, where different political parties need to work together towards a common goal. While the GE15 results may seem disastrous, they would also work as a catalyst for the nation to become a normal, world-class great country again.
