Women are unable to be representatives of voters in Sik, Kedah, claimed Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor.
His reason? Women take a lot of time to get ready to leave the house and will not be able to respond to emergencies.
In a viral video on TikTok, Sanusi can be heard saying, “At three in the morning, we could imagine how women sleep, moreover with their tangled hair. In that state, are they going to help flood victims?”
He then stressed that he did not mean to demean women but the Sik constituency is a big rural area with many people in need and they need help from their representatives round the clock.
“Women even when getting ready to leave the house, also take three hours,” he said.
He said this when campaigning for PAS parliamentary candidate, Ahmad Tarmizi Sulaiman in Sik as he defends against two women in the 15th General Election (GE15).
The two women are Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) former director Datuk Latipah Md Yatim (PH) and Wanita UMNO Sik division leader Maizatulakmam Othman (BN).
That should not come from a leader
Responding to Sanusi’s remark, the Barisan Nasional candidate for the Pendang parliamentary seat, Datuk Suraya Yaacob said all leaders need to be mindful when delivering their speeches because an election is where people choose their representatives, and thus, they should not demean any group.
“The National Council of Women’s Organisations Malaysia and I regret the speech of a leader who demeans women, and even an apology will not be able to ‘erase’ what has been said.”
“It is worth noting that there are women candidates representing his party in several constituencies and that his senior state executive councillor is also a woman,” she said.
She also called for all women machinery including supporters of PAS to look into this matter as it can turn into something dangerous.
In addition, she also condemned Sanusi for using the word ‘betina‘ in his speech to refer to the women candidates who are running their candidacy in Sik.
