In an unprecedented move, GE15 candidates from Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) have publicly declared their assets ahead of the general election for public scrutiny. While this move aims to improve transparency and accountability, some seems to think otherwise.

Speaking at the Friday sermon (11 November) in Marang, Terengganu, PAS President Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said that what the PKR candidates have done was a form of stupidity.

He said this when asked to comment whether the Islamist party will follow PKR’s footsteps in having election candidates declare their assets.

“Asset declaration is sometimes a form of stupidity. They want to show off,” he said, adding that there is no purpose in publicly declaring assets.

“Instead, we should show that we are good people,” Hadi added.

Merely thearics

Meanwhile, Perikatan Nasional (PN) election director Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali slammed such ‘public announcements’ as mere theatrics deployed by the Opposition.

He also criticised the candidates for declaring their assets while still involved in corruption. “Your candidates should not be allowed to submit the nomination paper on nomination day when you are still struggling in court. That is our stand,” Azmin said.

Azmin then said all Cabinet members will declare their assets to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), where the practice was popularised by PN chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin when he was leading the government as the prime minister.

“We don’t need to follow them in publicly declaring assets. This is all theatrics,” he said.

Therefore, he said that candidates from Perikatan Nasional (PN) will not follow suit with what their contenders are doing.
