First time in Malaysian history
It is the first time in Malaysia’s history that a political party have its candidates publicly declare their assets ahead of the general election.
The movement was led by Rafizi Ramli and he claimed that it can instill public’s confidence in PKR parliamentary candidate.
“We want to be as transparent as possible to show to the public that we can be trusted. It’s about setting a higher standard for candidates – if they wish to serve in public office, they must be open to public scrutiny about their finances,” he was quoted as saying by The Star.
Meanwhile, Rafizi also said he will introduce a new law that mandates politicians and civil servants declare their assets if the Pakatan Harapan coalition wins the general election.
“This law would ensure only those who truly want to serve the people would run for elected office,” he said.
