While many have a perception that fine dining restaurants would pay their staff better salaries than ordinary restaurants, the truth may let you down.
Recently, a Twitter user took it online to call out the newly opened Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill at Sunway Resort for paying its staff the minimum wage of RM1,500.
The Twitter user uploaded a video by social media influencer @ivor_sianz who went to Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill with her friends to try out its menu. Among the food that she ordered include the famous Wellington beef slice (RM300), mashed potatoes (RM40), and most shockingly, a bottle of water that costs RM36!
It is understood that the bill averages about RM250 which are shared among Ivor and her friends.
The Gordon Ramsay restaurant in Malaysia charges RM300 per SLICE of beef Wellington, RM40 for mashed potatoes, and RM36/bottle of water but pays his waitstaff RM1.5k, sous chef RM5.5-7k only. Meanwhile, the Twitter user slammed the restaurant operator for charging an exorbitant price for the food but paying the minimum salary to its employees.
“The Gordon Ramsay restaurant in Malaysia charges RM300 per SLICE of beef Wellington, RM40 for mashed potatoes, and RM36/bottle of water but pays his waitstaff RM1,500, sous chef RM5,500 – 7,000 only,” the user wrote.

The user uploaded two job postings by the restaurant on a job portal in the tweet, where it showed the offer for a hostess was between RM1,500 to RM2,100, while a sous chef was paid between RM5,500 and RM7,700.
Elaborating further, the user said that five slices of beef wellington totaled up to RM1,500, and that is the monthly wage for a waiter.
The tweet has sparked a huge backlash from netizens, with many criticising the restaurant operator for allegedly underpaying their staff. Meanwhile, some netizens expressed shock when they found out customers was charged an extravagant price for a bottle of water.
On the other hand, one netizen, who used to work at a hotel under the Sunway group, pointed out that the salaries there are too low for the required job scope. Even more so, they do not provide parking for the staff. “In the end, I decided to pull out. Not to mention the politics,” the netizen said.
