A married couple is being investigated for allegedly sniffing glue while driving with their four-year-old child in the backseat.
In a statement, Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Christopher Patit said the police has found the couple in the viral video that showed a family driving around Ayer Keroh while getting high by sniffing glue.
He said the video was captured at 4.30 pm on Friday (7 October) before it was posted on Instagram. The 17-second footage showed a man breathing into a transparent plastic bag before passing it to his wife.
Christopher said the police then initiated a probe and managed to track down the couple to their house at Kampung Bukit Pegoh in Pernu at 11 pm on 8 October.
He said that the 33-year-old male driver, along with the 23-year-old female passenger and their four-year-old girl believed to be the driver’s stepdaughter, have been brought to the IPD Melaka Tengah for questioning.
“After being investigated, the driver admitted that he was in fact sniffing glue, while the female passenger did not admit to the act.”
“The urine test results of the driver and passenger were found to be negative,” he said.
He added the 33-year-old man is self-employed while his 23-year-old wife works as a restaurant helper.
The investigation is conducted under Rule 17 of the Road Transport Rules 1959 (LN 166/59).
Unfortunately, glue sniffing is not a criminal offence in Malaysia. Thus, it is difficult for the authorities to take legal action against them.
The long-term effects of glue sniffing also include memory loss, addiction and brain degeneration.
