The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is concerned about the increase in number of women arrested for corruption, says its chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki.

According to Bernama, Azam Baki said the number of corruption cases involving women as the perpetrators was on the rise, where the statistics showed a total of 824 women were arrested from 2017 until August this year and of that number, 356 were charged in court.

“The women who were charged are those with power and held positions. When I first joined the organisation, which was then known as BPR (Badan Pencegah Rasuah), there was hardly a woman arrested for corruption in a year.”

“Corruption is about people who have power, the people who are given the trust and responsibility, ” he was quoted saying.

Meanwhile, Azam Baki also talked about political funding and said there is a need for the government to formulate a law on it to expedite the requirements for politicians and political parties to declare the funds they received.

He added that there is currently no law governing funds received by politicians and political parties in Malaysia.

Thus, he said it is not a crime for politicians and political parties to accept political funding and donations, be it from corporations or individuals, provided the money is not from unlawful sources.

However, it would become a crime if it can be proven that the funds given to the politician are for gratification, he added.

Azam Baki also said MACC had received many complaints about political entities receiving funds in the form of bribes.

“We do investigate, but many cases end up with no prosecution. The complainants are disappointed, but what can we do as there is no specific law, we classify it as bribery,” he explained.

Missing the point

Azam Baki’s remarks did not go well with netizens and many has taken it online to slam him missing the point about corruption.

“That should be the least of your concern, what should be a concern is why after so many years there is still a lot of corruption cases,” a netizen said.

“Corruption and bribery regardless of their gender, race, religion etc… don’t go making foolish comments like this,” another netizen said.

Meanwhile, some netizens brought up Azam Baki’s alleged corruption case where he was accused of owning of millions in publicly traded shares.
