A marathon usually runs up to several kilometres and it is one of the most tiring sports. In addition, one would require months of training before one could prepare themselves to join one.
While most think that such strenuous sport is not suitable for the senior citizen, this 88-year-old Malaysian has proved to everyone that age is not a limiting factor.
The annual PJ Half Marathon that was held on last Sunday (25 September) at Dataran Petaling Jaya, Selangor, featured a variety of race distances including 3km, 10km, 21km and 30km.
While most of the participants were youths, the spotlight immediately turned towards an 88-year-old senior citizen when he reached the finishing line of the 10km run. What’s more about this is that he managed to complete it in just under 90 minutes!
According to the ActionPix Malaysia Facebook page, the senior runner is Ong Kim Hwa, who comes from Seremban, Negeri Sembilan. It is said that he managed to finish the 10km marathon race in 1 hour 25 minutes 32 seconds despite his age.
What’s more impressive about it is that he managed to finish the race despite the downpour during the event.
Meanwhile, the post by ActionPix Malaysia has gone viral with many netizens amused by the uncle’s achievement and determination despite his age. Many also said that he is an inspiration for others to keep on going.
“Uncle Ong. You inspire me to keep on going. Wishing you many many more years of good health and keep on running,” a netizen said.
“I am in my mid 30s and I couldn’t even finish 3 km. What a shame! Congrats to Uncle Ong and I wish you good health and happiness and many more years to come. God bless,” another netizen said.
“Wow, congratulations uncle Ong, to you age is only a number,” one netizen commented.
Congratulations, Uncle Ong for completing the marathon! We hope that you keep on running and be the inspiration to the others!
