While the world superpowers do have more influence around the world, it is important to note that the world does not revolve around only them. The other nations and their people deserve equivalent respect as well.
Unfortunately, the negative perception and stereotypes that third-world countries are undeveloped and backwards remain strong to this day. One latest example is a recent incident where western media addressed some world leaders as “lesser world leaders”.
Among the figures who were given this label were mostly African leaders and sadly, our very own Agong, who is on a trip to the late Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral and reception ceremony of King Charles III, was addressed in such a manner.

The news report was published on 13 September, where it speaks about President of the United States, Joe Biden heading to Westminster Abbey for the Queen’s funeral in his armoured vehicle, while the lesser world leaders will have to adapt and make do with a shared bus.
The report also showed an image of the safety features of the US President’s armoured vehicle, dubbed the Armored Beast.

On the other hand, the leaders who took the shared bus were mostly African leaders and our King, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah was part of the group.
Meanwhile, the term “lesser world leaders” did not sit well with some netizens, with many pointing out that it is derogatory to their nation’s leader.
One notable comment was from the Senator of Nigeria, who question the necessity for the author to address the President of his country and other leaders as “lesser world leaders”.

Racism will never stop
“Lesser world leaders? Can you please give some examples?” a netizen asked.
“Quite condescending to use the word lesser for others,” another netizen said.
