Selangor Sultan strips Najib and Rosmah off their titles due to their criminal convictions

With immediate effect, Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has revoked the titles that were conferred by him to former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

In a statement, state secretary Datuk Haris Kasim said the revocations applies to Najib’s “Datuk Seri” and “Datuk” titles that were awarded in 2004 and 1992, respectively.

As for Rosmah, she was stripped of her “Datin Paduka Seri” title, which was conferred in 2005.

“The revocation takes effect on 12 September 2022, in accordance with His Majesty’s prerogative powers under Article XXXVII and Article XXXIX of the Constitution of the Government of Selangor, 1959 as well as the related Status of Majesty and conventions practiced in the State of Selangor,” he said in a statement.

Haris explains that the decision was made following consultation with the Selangor Council of the Royal Court and in line with the state constitution.

Najib was convicted of abuse of power, breach of trust and money laundering of the funds of SRC International Sdn Bhd by the High Court in 2020.

On 23 August, the Federal Court upheld the conviction and sentence against him that had been previously decided by the Kuala Lumpur High Court.

On the other hand, Rosmah was convicted on three charges involving the offences of soliciting and accepting bribes by the Kuala Lumpur High Court on 1 September.

Haris said both the husband and wife’s titles were revoked due to their recent conviction of criminal cases.

However, Najib and Rosmah still carry various titles that had been bestowed on them by rulers of other states.

Meanwhile, the Sultan also revoked the title of former secretary-general (KSU) of the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development, Mohd Arif Ab Rahman who was convicted and sentenced on corruption charges on 23 January 2021 by the Kuala Lumpur High Court.
