While most of us grow up watching Spongebob Squarepants or Tom and Jerry, these are cartoons of the past and children these days are no longer watching them. Instead, they watching cartoons like Bluey and Hilda.
However, one of the most popular cartoon, Peppa Pig recently came under criticisms from parents after it introduces a same sex couple into the cartoon.
Peppa Pig is a cartoon that depicts a family of pigs: mummy pig, daddy pig, Peppa and George, in their daily lives.

In its latest episode that was aired in the UK on 6 September, the episode talked about Peppa’s friend, Penny Polar Bear who has parents of the same sex.
While drawing a portrait of her family, Penny said, “I live with my mummy and my other mummy. One mummy is a doctor and one mummy cooks spaghetti.”
The programme, created by British animators Mark Baker and Neville Astley, has been running since 2004 and this is the first time in its 18-year history it features a same-sex couple.
PEPPA PIG has introduced its first LGBTQ+ couple on its latest episode.

After the episode came out, there was a mixed reaction from netizens, with some netizens pointing out that same-sex marriage in a children’s cartoon is making the show “political”, while others supported it.
“Jesus Christ. Not even Peppa Pig is safe. Why ram it down little kids’ throats that it’s normal to be gay? Leave kids alone. Absolutely disgusting,” a netizen said.
“That’s it. My child will never watch Peppa Pig. I walked into my son’s room and caught Peppa teaching my 5 year old son about gay sex. I shot the TV with my AR15 and banned him from ever seeing British people again,” another netizen said.
we should stop announcing when gays are in shows. just surprise us. i wanna see parents in shock horror when baby Chlamidia sees lesbians in Peppa Pig. no preliminary OFCOM complaints. just sudden gay induced fear please

On the other hand, some lauded the cartoon for creating awareness for the LGBTQ community. Some also said the introduction of same sex couples is to “depict reality” that such couples exists in our community.
Nonetheless, this is not the first cartoon that depicts couples of the same sex. Earlier in July, Malaysian parents came across a such couple in the cartoon ‘Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous’.
However, Malaysian parents in general are not receiving this well and said homosexuality should not be normalise in our society.
