On Monday (5 September), former Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik took to his official Facebook page and claimed that millions of ringgit, if not billions, have been misappropriated from funds meant for education.
In the post, he said he has filed numerous reports on the misappropriation of funds when he was the Education minister from May 2018 until January 2020 in the former Pakatan Harapan federal government.
“Actually there are many more cases of leakages in the Education ministry (KPM) that involve millions and even billions which caused allocations that should be used on quality education for our children to be misappropriated,” he said.
However, Maszlee did not elaborate on this or give any details.
He shared that among the things he often did when he is in the ministry was to make surprise visits and visit poor schools.
“Following my visits, I would ask the state education department to take immediate action and will monitor the progress of the construction and rehabilitation of the poor schools concerned.”

“It was not enough for us in Putrajaya just to monitor, I also asked the Corporate Communication and IT Unit to build a progress dashboard for poor schools on the KPM website so that the public and MPs can monitor the progress.”
He then lamented how some Barisan Nasional (BN) kleptocrats were greedy enough to take funds worth billions of ringgit from KPM to fund their personal lifestyle and left children in Sabah and Sarawak continued to suffer.
“We are grateful for the judgment on the culprits who were involved in taking bribes of millions of ringgit for a failed solar project,” he said.
While he did not mention it, it is believed that his remarks came after the former Prime Minister’s wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor was found guilty of corruption involving more than RM180 million in funds for a solar energy project for Sarawak schools.
Meanwhile, he said that there are actually many more cases of leaks in the Ministry of Education.
“For the sake of putting an end to the crime that preys on the children of our nation, let’s make sure that BN and PN do not return to the government in GE15,” he said.
